Types of Attic Insulation
An insulated attic improves the comfort of your home and reduces energy costs. It can even increase your home’s value, as well as extend the lifespan of your roof and other components. A professional insulation contractor can inspect your attic and provide you with recommendations specific to your home and needs, including which type of attic insulation to install.
There are 4 common types of attic insulation: fiberglass batts, blown-in cellulose, rigid foam, and spray foam. Each offers different applications, depending on your attic space and DIY preference.
The Long-Term Benefits of Attic Insulation from AFT Insulation
Spray foam insulation is made from recycled sand and glass and can reduce noise and keep heat in your home. Its effectiveness can be diminished over time, however. Fiberglass is a hazardous material that is harmful if it comes into contact with your skin or inhaled, so proper safety gear should be worn during installation.
Blown-in cellulose insulation is a green, earth-friendly option that has an R-value of 3.2 to 3.7 per inch and can be used in place of fiberglass or mineral wool insulation. However, cellulose is sensitive to moisture, so it must be treated with chemicals like ammonium sulfate and borate to prevent the growth of mold.
Rigid foam insulation is a panel or board made of polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane that’s installed against attic joists. It has a high R-value per inch and is moisture-resistant, but it’s more expensive than other attic insulation options. Aside from its insulating properties, rigid foam is durable and resistant to compression and damage.
